Description	Portrait of John chisum in his later years wearing a dress coat, collared shirt and cravat with a watch on a chain hanging from his neck. Known as a "cattle king" in southeastern New Mexico, Chisum is known for creating the historic "Chisum Trail" from the town of Paris, Texas to the Pecos Valley in southeastern New Mexico. Chisum was a business associate of Alexander McSween, a principal figure in the Lincoln County War with money, advice, and influence behind the scenes, he played a role in the dispute between the opposing factions of cattle farmers and business owners. Note on the reverse of the photograph suggests that the watch and chain worn by Chisum in this poprtrait of him was given to him by his business partner, William Charles Goodnight, and that the watch had once mysteriously disappeared. The note goes on to say that "there is a rumor that the heavy chain was bestowed on Mrs (Susan) McSween, which as you possibly know was John Chisum's paramour."
