The Kimball Collection is a series of roughly 7,000 unidentified color transparencies , slides , and stereographs taken between 1951-1958 . The project was aimed at highlighting the plight of American Indian communities during the 1950s as well as preserving images of Native arts , crafts , and culture for future generations . The project was directed by Kimball , a noted New York based artist , and the photographs were taken primarily by artist Royal Lowy and other secondary photographers including Kimball’s husband , atomic scientist Harvey Slatin .
