The bridge provided faster and easier travel between Silver City and Glenwood, Alma and Mogollon. The bridge had been proposed in 1863 during the building and occupation of Fort West, which was 2 miles east and slightly north of the bridge. Many years passed before a Bill could be introduced and passed by the Santa Fe legislature because before any action could be taken by the County Commissioners, a petition of 400 Grant County taxpayer signatures had to be signed.
