The first social service building erected at a government hospital, the club was available to all war veterans. The Masons from all over the United States provided the money to build the ""Moorish and Pueblo Indian style"" club house, with additional funds donated by them to furnish it. Besides a lounge, the club boasted a billiard room with three tables, an auditorium and a guest room, furnished from funds provided by the Santa Rita lodge. Aztec Lodge No. 3 of Las Cruces donated a wireless set.The newly commissioned second lieutenant Pershing went into action immediately in the Southwest in the Sixth Cavalry, under the command of General Nelson Miles, who was then in his closing campaign against Chief Geronimo and his Apaches. Pershing's daring and quick action won him within a year a commendation from General Miles for ""marching his troops with pack trains over rough country 140 miles in forty-six hours and bringing in every man and animal in perfect condition.""
