John Coalter Bates born August 26th, 1842, son of Edward Bates (Attorney General under President Abraham Lincoln) served as an officer in the United States Army, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant General and serving as Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Retired in 1906. Died February 4th, 1919 at San Diego, California. Buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Information courtesy of Arlington National Cemetery.
