Description	This serigraph work by López Castro celebrates mestizaje (miscegenation), the union of the European and Indian races that resulted from the Spanish Conquest of Mexico (1519-1521). Here the artist appears to reference José Clemente Orozco’s fresco of the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and his consort Marina (La Malinche) that was painted in the stairway of the National Preparatory School in 1926. López Castro completely transforms the image. In his hands Orozco’s rigid and distanced primordial couple become pliable and loving. She appears to have walked out of a codice, pictographic manuscripts created by the indigenous Mesoamerican people prior to and after the Conquest, wearing an elaborate headdress and accessories. Footprints indicative of travel in the codices surround the couple as they lay on woven palm leaf matt or petate. The bloody sword of conquest and a Christian cross frame them. Below their feet are offerings: the alcoholic drink pulque, incense, and food. In a literal representation of the mixing of races, the artist merges Malinche’s brown skin and Cortés’ pink flesh.
