Description	Transcription of a petition for nobility, by Cristobal de Avila, Maese del Campo of the New Mexico colony. The Spanish Crown had promisedto grant noble status - to be hidalgos, hijodalgos - to the first settlers with Juan de Onate in 1598 - if they stayed five years in the new colony. Avila had served in New Spain at his own expense without royal compensation since 1608, including more than five years in New Mexico, and was seeking nobility and recognition of his many contributions, p. 1 of 46. Dated September 22, 1631.
