Subject	Tiwa Indians - History - 17th century
Description	Transcription of a royal order, from the Viceroy of New Spain, don Antonio Sebastian de Toledo, Marquez de Mancera, appointing Pedro de la Aguila, Tigua Indian, as Governor of the Tiguas - Isleta Pueblo, in the Jurisdiction of Las Salinas, for his life time and that of his sons. Aguila received this honor due to his abilities and his more than ten years as a loyal vassal serving the Spanish crown in New Mexico - including as an interprete and Isleta governor, and for his help to the Spanish soldiers during difficult expeditions and against enemies, and his assistance to Padre Fray Juan de Salas in bringing Christianity to the Ipotlapigua Indians, Southwest of Zuni. Aguila was recommended for the post by several of the Spanish governors of New Mexico, including don Diego de Penalosa. Dated February 9, 1665.
