Subject	Jemez Pueblo (N.M.) - History - 17th century
Description	Transcription of a royal order, from the Viceroy of New Spain, don Antonio Sebastian de Toledo, Marquez de Mancera, appointing Mateo Pacheco, Indian, as Governor of the Jemez, for his life time and that of his sons. Pacheco received this honor due to his abilities and his service to the Spanish crown in New Mexico, defending his people and lands from the Apaches and going on expeditions with the Spanish into the Apache country, during which he brought along his own (Indian) troops, and for numerous other contributions. Pacheco was recommended for the post by several of the Spanish governors of New Mexico, including don Diego de Penalosa. Dated February 9, 1665
